Named after a routine truce in (american) football, Fair Catch is a book of photographs mediating disorder and formality. Photographed sparingly over several years and countries, it loosely revolves around a recurring cast of figures and fixations: sculpted clutter and casually distorted bodies, a dog gradually growing old and blind, horses repeatedly tethered to dwarfing landscapes. The resulting collection of pictures — sequenced around an image of Anne Carson’s Stanzas, Sexes and Seductions affixed to the refrigerator — playfully wrestles with meaning-making as it teases the errant out of the familiar and embraces the errant with warm familiarity.
Madison Carroll was born in Philadelphia. She currently lives in New York City where she is a freelance photographer.
